BRENDAN BRAZIER WRITES ABOUT THE ALMOST SCI-FI IDEA OF “growing a younger body”:
Biological age refers to the time that has passed since body cells last regenerated. When we exercise, the body must regenerate its cells more rapidly than when idle. Depending on activity level, six to eight months from now our bodies will have regenerated nearly 100 percent of their tissue at the cellular level. This new tissue will literally be made up of what we eat between now and then. The body of an active person is forced to regenerate rapidly; therefore, it consists of more recently produced—younger—cells, making for a younger body.11
Mu Jin Han, a bodybuilder based in Los Angeles, is the perfect example of growing a younger body. We hung out with him at the gym while he worked out.
“I’ve been vegan since I was 45,” he tells Keegan and me. “I’m 55 now, and I feel like I’m 32.”
The guy is totally ripped. His muscles look like they were cut with lasers.
“When I was 45,” he said, “I had aches in my neck, shoulders, and knees. Later I found out these were all inflammations caused by eating acidic foods and animal products. It took about two months for me to cut out animal products, and when I did, all the pains went away.”
“Did your weights go down at all?” I asked.
Han laughed. “I started working out when I was 47. All the muscles you see on me, I gained as a vegan. The youngsters at the gym told me, ‘Old man, you’ve got to eat meat or whey to build muscles.’ I said to them, ‘I’m eating like a gorilla—straight from Mother Earth. I get everything I need and nothing I don’t.’”
“Were the two months of transition difficult?” Keegan asked.
“Well, in the beginning,” said Han, “I didn’t know anything. After a month, I made friends with other vegans who gave me lots of tips. I got information on the internet and from books. Like everything, it’s much easier when you have knowledge.”
“What does health mean to you?” I asked.
“Health is a marathon, not a sprint,” Han replies. “A lot of younger guys say, ‘I eat a lot of meat and dairy, and I’m healthy.’ I say, ‘When I was your age, I ate junk, and I looked healthy. But when you get to be my age, you start to feel the effects of your lifelong diet.’ True health is how you feel when you’re in your 60s, 70s, 80s, 90s. Now, we’re entering the Star Trek age.”
“The what?”
“The Star Trek age. Vegan meat and cheese will surpass the real thing.”
“Hey, yeah!” I said. “You know they’re all vegan in Star Trek, right? Except for the Klingons and a few others.”
I love Star Trek. I’ll always remember when Commander Riker said, “We no longer enslave animals for food purposes.” Make it so, Number One.
Sorry. I have to let the geek out for air every once in a while. Let’s bring it back.
“What supplements do you take?” I asked.
